Both directions means that you can carve into the social as well. There might be a bit of resistance, but that's kind of how the social world works. It's an attempt to share and reinforce a reality. If you want to change that reality in any way you have to push against the existing structure. As you've noticed, you can sometimes create/find a substructure that is more flexible or has ready-made spaces to work with. Sometimes not.
