(no subject)

It's curious, the compulsion I often feel to suspend aesthetic appreciation based on the subject; why does that feel like "courtesy"?

I'd answer, but I don't want to injure your self-image, or upset you needlessly. ;)

Intellectuals walk a thin line between a policy of detached social assimilation and outright rejection of all the false little rituals that people use to keep from upsetting the normals.

Kind of like not meeting the gaze of certain animals, because you're not sure how they'll interpret eye-contact.

Or have I missed your point entirely?

This is pretty common, since there is a line, which differs in placement for different people, where it goes from appreciation to lewdness.
