Intellectuals walk a thin line between a policy of detached social assimilation and outright rejection of all the false little rituals that people use to keep from upsetting the normals.
Kind of like not meeting the gaze of certain animals, because you're not sure how they'll interpret eye-contact.
In specific, going from the base response of, "Wow, who's the cutie?" to realizing it's the consort of a co-worker, and suddenly feeling a bit like I shouldn't think that way about that subject.
