OK, so I saw Rikki Wilchins speak (to a surprisingly small crowd; only a dozen or so) tonight, and she was cool. Taller and more tan than I had imagined, but very relaxed, comfortable, and just cool. Her talk was less the full on, hardcore, professional amongst professionals talk I was craving, and a bit more of public relations/outreach/activism, but still, very cool. The tiny one and I seemed to really, really attract her attention; made me a little uncomfortable, and a little flattered, but mostly confused; it's not like either of us said anything. At one point, she asked if anyone understood Judith Butler, but a sudden attack of doubt kept me from being the sole person who would have said 'yes' (I think I understand her, but maybe I don't?). But, we were thanked for coming, and she asked us if we were going to the national GenderPAC conference in DC in May, even making a point of mentioning that scholarships were available if it was a question of money. While very cool, I still wonder what we did to stand out so; it's very confusing.
