Montag am Donnerstag
Nov. 17th, 2005 08:58 amMany months ago, I bought an album by the band Montag. I was driving home one day and heard a song on the local college station that so grabbed me I had to pull over and call the dj to ask what it was. That night, I went home and ordered "Alone not Alone", and anxiously awaited its arrival.
The day it arrived, I headed immediately to my stereo (in the basement, for what it may be worth) and queued it up. I was shockingly not grabbed; the whole album left me cold, and confused. Luckily, the other cds in my package held my attention (mainly MIA, to put it into chronological perspective).
Today on a whim, I grabbed the cd again as I headed into work. It was a cold, clear, still morning, and suddenly again, the music just clicked. Deceptively simple sounding, elegant, watery and clear, they remind me of a gentler, more melodic Stereolab (which I like as well). The vocalists' voices interact, when they do, perfectly, and stand alone as well. The instrumental tracks are inobtrusive in their lack of vocals, but still captivating. Thinking back, the day I first heard them I was driving home along a tree lined street, and the angle of light was almost exactly the same as it was this morning, if coming from the west rather than the east. As I recall, there was a chill in the air; though it wasn't cold, something in the feel of it was the same. Context, it would seem, has given me access again to really excellent music that I would recommend, highly, to just about anyone.
