Jan. 22nd, 2007 06:15 pmI don't remember January 22, 1973, and I'm sure I had no idea how important a date it was at the time, but I'm glad I can say that abortion became legal in my lifetime.
Today is officially Blog for Choice Day, but I think I'd rather Blog for Reproductive Justice (hat tip to Amanda at Pandagon). I'm pro abortion because I'm for reproductive choice and for personal bodily autonomy. I'm against forced pregnancy and against even the possibility of pregnancy being used as an excuse to subjugate a huge chunk of humanity.
I'm pro abortion like I'm pro heart valve replacement surgery. It'd be great to reduce the need for heart valve surgeries, but I think it's stupid to assume the best way to do that is to tell people it's their fault if they have heart problems, and even stupider to actively and aggressively work to restrict access to information and preventative technology that would drastically reduce heart issues in the country, yet that's exactly what's happening with reproductive issues. Abstinence only education doesn't reduce abortion, it increases the penalties for women having sex, yet I find it very curious that most of the most vocal voices against legal abortion are also against sex education and access to contraception.
I am 100% pro abortion, pro sex, pro sex education, pro birth control, pro personal body ownership and integrity. I celebrate Roe v Wade today, proudly.
