counting to god
Jul. 13th, 2007 07:13 amSomething a lot of people probably don't know about me is that I sometimes count things. I don't think it's compulsive; I don't count to try to avert disaster, or anything like that, but sometimes, it's just... fun? to count everyday things, rather than let them pass unnoticed or unremarked.
Just recently, I read about the origins of the Friday the 13th superstition. Reputedly, 13 was a number sacred to Freyja, and Friday is actually named after her. This has changed my awareness of 13 in my daily life. Before, there was that silly thrill of bad luck, of courting minor misfortune if anything ended in 13, but now, for example when walking down our basement stairs, I find myself thinking, "11...12...Freyja" and it makes me smile.
So I'll be thinking of the Norse goddess of love, beauty, magic, attraction and war a lot today. It is, after all, Friday the 13th.
Hey, Freyja :)
