It's not hard for me to envision modern fuedalism, in which private security guards with legal rights to shoot to kill protect the oligarchs' version of "society", while the growing underclass scrambles to find food, or even a chance to sell some integrity for a meal and a place to sleep for a few weeks. Add in the inevitable and unprepared for decline in oil (extraction and production), and it becomes impossible to escape economically depressed areas that cannot sustain themselves, since almost all food is produced in giant corporate farms in ways that encourage single crops, not healthy local life. The poor can choose to take up arms to protect the rich from their fellow poor, or starve. This is what collapse looks like to me.
