Wow, that comes really close to something I think about a lot.
I dislike the word 'nihilism', though- it's too much like the insult in Tibetan Buddhism, where you take the 'world as illusion' stuff too literally.
The other day I was thinking of it as two forks: there's the fork you follow to suppress that which is getting you down. That's the fun stuff, the fight club, the 'make kaput what makes you kaput'.
And the other fork is the redemption, the growth, the realisation of identity that the opponent has no effect on for good or ill.
Pursue the growth path alone, you'll always wonder how something hostile tends to trim you down to size. Pursue the path of opposition alone, and you become your enemy.
