Anyone else notice that the Zion tribal booty rave was strictly boy-girl-boy-girl? Even in "straight" clubs, you'll see the occasional boy dancing by boy, girl by girl. It had to have taken very deliberate and careful editing to get those specific shots; I'm curious about the reasoning.

actually, i noticed that too--and i was prepared to squawk, but then it occurred to me to think of it from another angle.

there is a limited tribal human population, one that only occasionally can replenish itself from outside sources (i.e., unplugging others), and therefore fertility is probably quite a big deal. i ended up interpreting the "rave" scene as a fertility festival intended to boost spirits and reproductive sexual action. that would necessarily preclude any non-reproductive intercourse--which one can only assume would be frowned upon as being somewhat pointless and/or counterproductive (as has historically been the case in many cultures that depend heavily upon regular baby-making to maintain a somewhat unstable population--depleted by regular war or illness).

I noticed the level of possibly-necessity-induced-heterosexism in the counsellor's speech ("Our husbands and wives..."), but even in overtly hetero arenas, people bump into those they don't necessarily want to have sex with, regardless of plumbing. It made the whole thing decidedly unnatural to me, and thus I assume it was a specific editing decision based not so much on diegetic logic as contemporary attitude (can't even potentially alienate the majority fan base (which is also why I assume the philosophy was so dumbed down. If only the Wachowskis were French; then you'd have kick ass action and really dense philosophy. The kids would have to see it again and again to try and "get" it all. Hey, maybe I should do marketing or something...)).

Actually, I suppose you weren't paying attention - there was a fair amount of it. In fact, much of it was molding of the entire group together.

I really, really paid attention in that scene; who wouldn't at a mass of fit, semi-clad writhing bodies? I noticed that they sneakily/accidentally dressed many of the folks in all but identical clothing, and shot suggestively, but to my arrogantly priveleged eyes, I saw only girl-boy-girl-boy. I guess I'll have to wait for DVD release to be sure.
