For a long, long time now (basically, since about the age of eight or so), I haven't liked my name. Firstly, I am the third iteration of the nomenclature in my family; originality isn't the strongest trait in my father's line. Secondly, I don't like the way it sounds; open with a soft, awkward vowel, then just sort of trailing off into consonants (this is probably the primary source of dislike; aesthetics are important to me, even though most people seem to have trouble believing that). Thirdly, of course, it's a pretty damned genderfied name, and that's not necessarily comfortable, becoming less so over time.

So, gentle readers, I'm hitting you up for possible suggestions. I'n not necessarily looking for a proper name, but then again, I'm not necessarily *not*, either. Feel free to be as funny as you care to be, but this is a semi-serious polling kind of thing for me; I have a weird relationship to names and naming (probably a subject for another post, if I remember and get around to it).

I sometimes use your name with a 'y' ending - less genderfied. And I consider names flexible; even my legal name isn't my birth name.

I have always been fond of Piper Talley (fill in last name of your choice). It is gender neutral. It is from a great fairy tale and the other name is my Maternal Grandmother's maiden name and they were a wonderful bloodline. I used to think that if I ever changed my name or had a child that I would use that. But, since neither is likely I offer it to you. Besides that, I know you would do it great honor.

We just need to sit down with one of those baby names books and try on different names. One suggestion, though ... avoid things like medieval french spelling, which get annoying after a while. ;-)

If I were to rename myself, I'd like to go with a one word name.... or at least proceeded by The.

I don't think that helps though...
