Finally saw Hedwig and the Angry Inch tonight, and it was... interesting. I'm a sucker for glam/punk, and there was that, in spades (the backing band was just amazing, though sometimes the vocals fell a little short). But, (as usual, I got a big ol' but) I have this nagging dissatisfaction with the usual interpretation of the differently gendered as acutely Other, and safely/distancingly, but superseriously, fucked up. It makes me miss the good old days in culture when all Hispanics were cholos, all Asians were either hardworking prodigies or kung fu masters, all blacks stepped and fetched, etc. I mean, come on, if it's good enough for *me*, surely it's good enough for everyone else?

But, I'm sure I see things in this regard, on this subject, differently than most. Sure, it's much closer to home to me, but I don't necessarily misread things (though sometimes, that surely happens; believe it or not, I am human.... mostly); I would suggest that I tend to see things most don't, because I'm attuned to it, not because I'm creating and installing it into what I see.

On an unrelated note, my friends just rock. I tend not to like the roll calls, as I worry that my sieve-like brain will leave out someone vital, but if I write/talk to you, and/or you write/talk to me, it's a safe bet you're included in the rockingness. I need to find ways to indicate this personally and individually; maybe I'll take up knitting and make you all ugly sweaters.

did you see the stage version or the film? i saw it live a year or two ago, & felt ambivalent. been meaning to rent the movie so i can try to form a better opinion (& of course, some critique).

The film. As a movie, they did some neat montages, some neat effects, but I take issue with the presentation of Hedwig herself.
