This is the Day

They've changed the music at the deli at which I eat lunch five days a week, to something alterna-80s (which means maybe 20% of the songs I hear were things about which I was very passionate about). Today, wrapped deeply in myself and my solitude, reading and trying to ignore the inane business chatter around me, I was jolted into awareness by a rattling synthed line that had me smiling before I had consciously placed the song. It was like something warm and golden welled up inside me and spilled out, pulling me back into the world with it. The The was one of too many bands I resisted at the time because of pressure to like them, only to realize their genius years later. This is the Day isn't my favorite song of Matt Johnson's (that would be Uncertain Smile), but it always makes me incredibly happy when I hear it, like I'm being clubbed over the head with a velvet cudgel lovingly wielded to make sure I get the truth that, yes, every day really can be The Day, and how amazing that is.
