Janis Joplin - "Piece of My Heart": it's for the feel of the middle verses, not the chorus; that sense of ragged but strong openness and hope in spite of it all.
Juno Reactor - "Masters of the Universe": that sense of frenzied running, maybe in anger, maybe in fear, maybe towards an object of longing, maybe just to get away.
Louis XIV - "Finding Out True Love is Blind" : I saw the video this morning, and it just seems to fit, particularly in light of your frequent recitations of happy drunk moments.
Veruca Salt - "Seether": it's the particular chunky irresistibility of the guitar, with the squeak of fingers on the strings as it repeats, and the exuberant, unrestrained expression of something that's not "supposed" to be expressed (really, this time it has nothing to do with my deep and abiding crushes on Louise and Nina).
Echo and the Bunnymen - "Never Stop": honestly, I'm not sure why, but it's the first song that came to mind. It might be something about the impassioned howling refusal to give in, with cool music (and cellos!).
Handsome Boy Modelling School - "I've Been Thinking": kind of like a background song for an establishment sequence of walking along, in an every day kind of way, to set mood and expectations.
Chemical Brothers - "Song of the Siren": happy, loud, almost grating but extra good because it's not, and it seems more in line with what you might really like to be playing and making.
Joan Osborne - "Lumina": there's something so achingly beautiful about this quiet little song that I can practically see the snow, and the sun reflecting off of it. It makes me long for a place I've never been, but still know.
Nico - "These Days": this is my favorite Nico song, and there's something of a refusal to give in to the melancholy in the surface layers that creeps through.
Tricky - "Hell is Around the Corner": there's something sly, slick and playful underneath the surface layers of menace and doom that really humanizes it and makes me smile.
Dressy Bessy - "If You Should Try to Kiss Her": super sweet, catchy, earnest poppy goodness of optimism and energy. If they ever remade the Mary Tyler Moore intro for modern alternatypes, this song would replace "Love is All Around".
The Edgar Winter Group - "Free Ride": clean, clear, catchy, rockin' just because, not trying to prove anything, and stuck in your head from the very first encounter. Plus, the lyrics are a great, simple truth that are irreducible.
The 5s, 6s, 7s, and 8s - "Pa Pa Ooh Maw Maw": it starts off as a classic straight ahead cover of a novelty rockabilly song, fast, chunky, energetic, and then it breaks down into silly giggling at the end.
As soon as I read your comment, I immediately heard the opening yell of The Replacements' "Favorite Thing", so that's got to be it. It's exuberant, a little nihlistically so, carries the seeds of its own destruction and dissolution, but holds together all the way through to end up as a shining example of what a pop love song should be... with teeth.
