For what do you use livejournal? Has that changed over the time that you've used it? If so, what are the reasons for change? Would you like to use it differently than how you do currently? If so, how?

(I'm thinking a lot about my answers to the above questions lately, and am very curious about the experiences of others.)

for now, I'll just tackle one:Would you like to use it differently than how you do currently? If so, how?

I'd like to see more of my LJ friends F2F, and rely less on it as a substitute for authentic connection.

Mine's for general contact. The audience has grown, and so have my topics. I've gotten more prolific, and my posts (tend) to be longer in general. I think that just means I have more questions, but also that I think about what I post before I hit that button...

It started as just a means of promotions for stuff in my life.
Then it became more social and a way to keep up with log distance friends.
Then it moved to fit my mantra of "Livejournal...cheaper than therapy".
How would I like to use it differently? hm....use it less as therapy...but not because I don't want it as such but because one day I won't need it as such.

Then and now, it is a) a means of efficiently keeping multiple people up-to-date on events in my life without repeating myself, especially the long-distance peeps, and b) a means of entertaining myself and/or others.

I suppose you could read b) as "efficiently telling jokes to multiple people without repeating myself." :-)

Oh, and...

Occasionally c) another venue in which interesting conversations sometimes happen, with the added benefit of being open for others to jump in.

Well, I won't be home before hitting the game, but I packed the cds this morning before I left, so no problem. :-) (I actually had them last week, too, but then we didn't end up playing.)

sometimes it's a record of sketches of thought; sometimes a wide and varied wish-upon/for list; mostly i use it as a way of keeping conversations alive with those i've "met" online.

it didn't start out to be this way, but i'd say 98% of my friends list are people i did not know in real life. i like that i've hand-picked and discovered and been discovered by thoughtful, engaged, literate individuals all over the place whose written voices have become voices with which i'm attuned to and engaged with/by on a near-daily basis.

i feel it is a different kind of writing place. it is not the same as written journal; it is not the same when you know you write for others to read. but it can and has been personal, illuminating, startling, encouraging and a bunch of other things in opposition and analagous to these qualities.

at times i've felt the need for a new face, a new space and a much more limited readership. on those (that) occasion, i created a seperate journal. sepearte journals for seperate purposes. i felt funny about it at first, but later it become very apparant that it was the right thing for me.

I use lj for a variety of things, depending on what I'm doing, how I'm feeling, etc.. Purposes include keeping friends updated on life stuff, sharing work, promoting stuff, seeking opinions, puzzling through things that are bothering me, a dumping ground for things in my head that won't stop rattling around, etc.. I strive for more honesty. That's always been the case, but it seems to go in cycles.

For spying on people, of course!

I originally started it out of peer pressure from other members of a local poly organization.

I then realized what a great tool it was for meeting new and interesting humans. ;) And, not just meeting them, but getting to know them in a different, more comfortable (for me) forum than in soul clothing.

I use it alot now to organize my thoughts, and as a way to document my life and any progress I am or am not making. I enjoy having various and sundry sounding boards It's very therapautic.

And, I enjoy keeping track of other humans with whom I would likely have otherwise lost touch.

I don't think I'd change anything.

i used to use it as a more news media blog thing, with lots of links, etc. then it was more of a contemplative place for theoretical questions. now it serves mainly for random updates about my life, to keep me in touch with folks who aren't local (about 80% of my friends), & to revel in various fandoms. i expect i'll swing back around to the contemplative stuff at some point, but i'm feeling a little too private & secretive lately to use lj for that. i'm pretty happy with how i use it now, but i always suspect my flist is bored.
