Today, against the pale blue white sky, the trees announced themselves, long and lean, bare elegant limbs stretched up, slightly outward and forward. They gathered at along the top of a slight rise, so many they almost blurred together, the space between them more telling than each individually.
I'll have days where I'm convinced I could look up and see figures between the trees, moving from somewhere else to here, through here, maybe to another destination, but in motion. I've felt the lure to walk up the hill, over the rise, into the thick of the trees and into whatever is there, but I haven't.
Today, the pull was different, as if the trees were the travelers, the gates, the guardians, and were making themselves known to me. "I'm willing to go, so long as I can come back and no one suffers for it" I found myself thinking, but time and work constraints kept me from making good. I sat on a bench by a gently babbling oxbow and closed my eyes. The wind kicked at leaves up the path, the brushed the hair along the back of my neck and the tips on top, and the sun brightened the view from behind my eyelids. For a brief moment, it felt like coming home.
