Well, I know why - I like to read my friends page, I love information and artwork and DIY stuff and thrive upon it all and need lots of bandwidth.
Also, I like to think and writing is a means to augment and alter one's thinking abilities - just like drug use, religion, meditation, music, sex, work, outbursts, etc...
OTOH, I am ashamed of having a journal. As though admitting to an active inner life is a crime, like owning eight sex toys in texas...
Yes, I ask that on a regular basis. I know the reason changes, sometimes hour to hour, but I tend to know exactly why I write here in general.
a. To keep in at least vague touch with a lot of people in an efficient way. To share what is going on with me and keep an idea of what is going on with them.
b. To keep a record of when things happened and the details of how they happened so I can go back and find it later. The number of "private posts" I have is large.
c. To work out feelings and thoughts and get other people's ideas about them. It's like big group therapy sometimes.
d. A lot of times I start feeling more private and consider changing some of the types of things I write--stopping the more rambly, personal, introspective ones. But people seem to get something out of them. People say "Thank you for writing this" a lot. And when I say that to people I'd be sad if they stopped writing that sort of stuff.
e. There's a performative and I'm sure at least somewhat narcissistic and exhibitionist bit to it. Sometimes I post because I think I'm being clever or entertaining.
f. The information sharing/seeking capabilities of the loose network are very useful.
g. And sometimes I compulsively post crap because I live alone and feel lonely and want some sense of connection. But I am better about realizing when I'm doing that now, and stopping.
