Possibly/probably a false dichotomy, but still an ineresting question

Why is it the choice often seems to be either knuckle under and conform, or face the fact that you'll be at odds with most everyone?

That's kind of my point; I can't see any other options. If there are any present, I wouldn't mind them being shown to me.

i think i've chosen to keep struggling to find a place between those two. it's a rough choice, but then, so are the other two.

assuming you decided you were going to 'give up and conform,' would you
a) know how to go about it and/or be able to perfprm it?
b) know how to judge whether it 'satisfied' or seemlessly match 'the norm'?
c) be sure that it would seem any less alien to those around you?

I think I'm operating under the assumption of trying to not make myself a target, to pass below the radar as much as possible. I make no presumption of total passing and assimilation, as I expect to be to some degree "alien" on the inside, if not the out.
