So Friday afternoon there was a job posting in my company; one of the clients for whom I'm officially tier 1 is looking for a tier 2 tech. Many of the other helpdesk folks seemed excited about it, and my manager made a point of asking me if I was applying.

I'm torn, for several reasons. First, the work I do I actually kind of enjoy. I genuinely like dealing with a lot of people, of getting to know them and help them out. It's the management, the environment I don't like, but the actual interactions with actual clients, I like, a lot.

The job would be support for a local retail chain. Less human interaction, more machines. It's a business casual environment, and to my knowledge, a staff of all straight white guys. I'd have to wear a tie and willfully enter into corporate guy drag just to apply.

It would get me away from my manager, who I really can't work for, but I'm afraid it would get me away from people too much. Too, I know that historically I've tended to accept difference as a substitute for better, and I tend to stay a long time once I jump ship. I'm really not sure this would even be better, just... different. I don't necessarily want to be 'more technical', you know?

So, I'm torn. Weigh in, if you've opinions.

what's the money difference?

If it's not significant, I'd stay where you are.

Mebbe apply if you there is a significant compensation difference (and you can never really know how social some task will be unless it involves old legal files, an attic, and no company?)?

And then once the toes are wet, look for something else entirely?

Work hard, so you can party harder. Really, that was my Dad's only advice when I embarked on my military career. The man was (still is) hardcore military. Me, I believe we're lucky to get paid for something we like to do. If it's a means to an end, go for the higher pay and promotion. Other from that, make sure that you're partying harder than you work;)

i think it's generally good to avail yourself of options, just to have them.

that said, i think it's good to apply for this one, and for others that you don't know about yet. the omens and vibes have been such for you for a while that it would be good to get out of where you are, and who you are around, on the work front.

good luck, my friend.

Business casual doesn't involve ties...?

You're not happy where you're at, and haven't been for a long time.
You've been more proactive in a million ways more than when you were feeling trapped at the Cow, and this could bear fruit. Just interviewing would cause no harm, and you could learn things.

I would stick with the annoying manager. The annoying manager is far more likely to change (read: move on) than the different job moving away from corporate guy drag. And, honestly, I think you'd be miserable in corporate guy drag.
