So Friday afternoon there was a job posting in my company; one of the clients for whom I'm officially tier 1 is looking for a tier 2 tech. Many of the other helpdesk folks seemed excited about it, and my manager made a point of asking me if I was applying.

I'm torn, for several reasons. First, the work I do I actually kind of enjoy. I genuinely like dealing with a lot of people, of getting to know them and help them out. It's the management, the environment I don't like, but the actual interactions with actual clients, I like, a lot.

The job would be support for a local retail chain. Less human interaction, more machines. It's a business casual environment, and to my knowledge, a staff of all straight white guys. I'd have to wear a tie and willfully enter into corporate guy drag just to apply.

It would get me away from my manager, who I really can't work for, but I'm afraid it would get me away from people too much. Too, I know that historically I've tended to accept difference as a substitute for better, and I tend to stay a long time once I jump ship. I'm really not sure this would even be better, just... different. I don't necessarily want to be 'more technical', you know?

So, I'm torn. Weigh in, if you've opinions.
